Independence Arch

Overview

Spanning the southern end of the historic Chamberlain Bridge, the Independence Arch serves as a triumphant symbolic gateway into downtown Bridgetown. Built in 1987 to commemorate the 21st anniversary of Barbados’s independence from British colonial rule, this impressive stone monument is intricately adorned with rich national iconography. Its pillars showcase carvings of the flying fish, the pelican, and the Pride of Barbados flower, while the base features the inscribed Barbadian National Pledge and a glass-enclosed golden plaque honoring the "Father of Independence," Errol Barrow. Overlooking the Careenage marine channel and the Parliament Buildings, it stands as a central pillar of national pride.
