Overview

Tucked away in a peaceful courtyard on Coleridge Street, the Montefiore Fountain (often called the Montefiore Monument) stands as a stunning monument to philanthropy, municipal history, and public health. Opened on November 2, 1865, this ornate neo-Gothic cast-iron and marble marvel was gifted to the city of Bridgetown by prominent Jewish businessman John Montefiore. It was dedicated in solemn memory of his father, John Castello Montefiore, a leading local merchant who was among the island's very first casualties during the devastating 1854 cholera epidemic. Though it no longer functions as a working public drinking water fountain, it remains a heavily studied gem of 19th-century artistry. Each of its four marble sides is meticulously carved with classical figures depicting the foundational civic virtues of Justice, Fortitude, Temperance, and Prudence.
