Overview

The Monument of Snurge is a majestic, life-sized bronze statue honoring one of the most successful European-trained Thoroughbred racehorses of the early 1990s. An Irish-bred champion owned by British businessman Sir Martyn Arbib, Snurge famously won the prestigious Classic St Leger Stakes in 1990 and retired holding a record for European prize earnings. Sculpted by prominent British artist Philip Blacker, the statue stood for decades at Sir Martyn's private winter estate on the west coast of Barbados. In 2018, it was generously gifted to St. Nicholas Abbey, where it now takes pride of place on the beautifully landscaped plantation grounds. It has quickly become a beloved landmark where visitors boarding the historic steam railway stop to snap photos and wave to the iconic horse.
