Standing proudly as a symbol of triumph and resilience, the Rock Hall Monument of Freedom anchors the historic Rock Hall Freedom Village. Established in 1841 just three years after full Emancipation, Rock Hall holds the distinction of being the very first freehold village created by formerly enslaved people in Barbados. The centerpiece of the park is a poignant, 20-foot-tall bronze and steel monument designed by Barbadian artist Stanton Haynes, depicting a family of three stepping forward into a new life of liberty. Visitors can cross a scenic walkway over a natural gully, explore vibrant heritage murals, and read memorial plaques inscribed with the names of the original 38 land-owning families who built this foundational community.
